How I create unique backgrounds for portraits

I’ve always liked shopping at thrift stores. To create unique and artistic portrait backgrounds I often use draperies, tablecloths or bedspreads found at thrift stores. Shown are an array of these fabrics hanging in my studio and some portrait backgrounds using these thrift store fabrics.

How to Prepare for your Portrait Session - 10 Tips

  1. Make sure your photographer knows your intent for your portrait, and the the look you’re going for.  A preplanning session with your photographer is essential for communicating, through photo examples and discussion, how you plan to use your portrait or headshot, and your likes and dislikes, so that your intent will be achieved in the final image.

  2. Plan in advance what you’ll wear that makes you look and feel your best. Don’t wear bold prints or loud colors that will bring the focal point of the photograph away from your face. Try on outfits and even look at selfies to see what looks best on you.

  3. Send selfies or snapshots to your photographer with the clothes you’ll be wearing so they can select a background that complements your clothes, hair and skin tone for a cohesive overall look.

  4. Have your hair styled or cut just before the shoot. Men should shave or have a beard trim immediately before the shoot. For women, hiring a makeup artist for the shoot is ideal and can be well worth it. I can arrange for a makeup artist or hair stylist to work with you to create the perfect look.

  5. On the day of the shoot bring it’s a good idea to bring alternative wardrobe choices - sometimes a different article of clothing looks better on camera than what you planned to wear. It’s good to stay flexible. Bring a range of accessories too.

  6. Bring anything that helps you feel relaxed and comfortable during the shoot - a music playlist, a favorite snack, or even a friend who won’t interfere with the photographer, but will bring out the best in you and help create a relaxed and fun atmosphere.

  7. The photographer will suggest poses, but don’t be afraid to find your own poses that feel natural to you.  Then let the photographer make adjustments to your natural poses.

  8. Get a good night’s sleep before the session so you’re rested and will look your best.

  9. Be on time for the shoot. This respects the photographer’s time and allows you to be more relaxed and unhurried.

  10. Have fun! A portrait session should be a fun experience, and if it is, your portrait or headshot will reflect that, and translate into photographs that show your best self.
