The Rich Tapestry of Gender

These images were exhibited at Overture Center Gallery in Madison, WI during their 2023 season, from Dec. 6 2022 to March 5th 2023. The exhibit presents portraits of individuals who identify their gender as non-binary. 

A non-binary gender recognizes that there are additional, deeply felt dimensions of gender, beyond the traditional categories of “boy” or “girl”, that make up the totality of one’s gender. Gender identity, gender expression and sexual preference combine with physical gender to create a rich tapestry of gender that’s unique to each person.

I am extremely grateful to all the wonderful human beings who allowed me to photograph them and who taught me a new understanding of the rich tapestry of gender. It is my hope that this exhibit will enlarge society’s understanding and acceptance of the totality of gender, and garner support for change.  As one of my subjects  said, “It’s difficult to be happy in life if you can’t live it as your authentic self.”
